Reading & Communication
Reading and Communication are woven through the curriculum within Preparation for Adulthood. Students work on personalised communication targets and teaching approaches may focus on signing, objects of reference, use of visuals and questioning techniques.
Skills are taught in a functional context so they are relevant to students as they progress onto their future destinations.
Contexts where communication is encouraged includes home management skills, organising and hosting events, using instructions, following a sequence and expressing opinions within class discussions.
Reading and communication sessions are included as part of the morning routines. Students work with increased independence to develop their love of communication and reading. This may entail completing a daily routine /jobs to set up for the day. Students may read and simply respond to varied texts, such as books, leaflets, news articles and magazines.
Our pupils also participate in focused signing sessions linked to music or functional everyday tasks.
