Curriculum
A high-quality physical education curriculum inspires all pupils to succeed and excel in competitive sport and other physically-demanding activities. It should provide opportunities for pupils to become physically confident in a way which supports their health and fitness. Opportunities to compete in sport and other activities build character and help to embed values such as fairness and respect.’ (curriculum.qcda.gov.uk)
At Elms Bank, Physical Education is to help develop the positive physical and mental health of our students, embedding life skills that will have a positive impact on their future.

Elms Bank recognises the vital contribution of physical education to a child’s physical, cognitive, social and emotional development as well as the role it can play in a child’s spiritual, moral and cultural development. We aim to provide a broad and balanced P.E. curriculum to aid children’s increasing self-confidence in their ability to manage themselves and their bodies within a variety of movement situations, providing them with opportunities to achieve ‘excellence for all’.
Students in this pathway attend PE for a double session a week with some students working on more bespoke programmes. Depending on academic level or level of regulation, some students are able to transition to other pathways for their PE lessons. Focus is on sensory and behavioural regulation using behavioural resources and TEACH tasks to engage students and prepare them for learning. Pupils will follow either the Explore or Inspire pathway focuses, depending on their academic abilities.
SMSC: PE at Elms Bank offers a broad and balanced PE curriculum and develops a range of life skills and values. The PE department encourages a willingness to participate in sporting opportunities that will help to develop positive attitudes towards different religious, ethnic and socio-economic groups in the local, national and global communities. Pupils are encouraged to work collaboratively, take on leadership roles and develop teamwork skills.
Extra-Curricular Opportunities: Physical Education and the aspects linked to the subject are fundamental to everyday life. As such, Elms Bank equips students with ‘hands on experience’ of PE which include participation in internal and/or external school competitions, experiences watching live sport and opportunities to experience sport and physical activities outside of school.
CEIAG: PE is a creative and highly inter-connected discipline which is essential to everyday life. Where appropriate, learning is related to real life, preparing pupils for their future. PE gives pupils the opportunity to develop their independence and life skills.
Wellbeing: The PE department supports the development of positive learners. This is demonstrated through the use of marking and feedback policy, supporting students to aspire to achieve, respond positively to regular praise, use of stickers and stamps, pathway champions and postcards. Physical activity is promoted through wellbeing times and pupils are encouraged to participate in the daily mile.
Values: The PE department supports the development of positive and resilient learners. Learning is scaffolded, modelled and revisited to allow for students to succeed and opportunities to try again. Elms Bank encourage the development of the Olympic and Paralympic values throughout its PE lessons (friendship, courage, inspiration, determination, equality, respect and excellence).
