Pupils in a food technology lesson at Elms Bank

Work Experience

All pupils in Year 10 take part in a work experience placement during the spring term. Pupils either participate in an external placement with a local business/ organisation, or complete a school based project here at Elms Bank.

This year, ten Year 10 pupils went out on external placements provided by a range of employers such as Slattery Patissier and Chocolatier, Boomerang Soft Play Centre and Pets at Home.

We aim to place all our pupils in placements which meet their needs and aspirations and are thankful to a number of local businesses and organisations with this.

We would like to thank the following organisations for supporting our pupils in their work experience this year:

  • Slattery Patissier and Chocolatier
  • Boomerang Multi-Sensory Play Centre
  • Millwood Primary School
  • All Saints Primary School
  • Pets at Home
  • ASDA
  • Morrisons
  • Bury Church of England High School
  • Warburtons
  • Stockley Farm
  • Manchester Museum of Science and Industry

Pupils are supported by staff as necessary whilst being encouraged to be as independent as possible on placement. For some, this means making their way independently to and from their placement and completing their daily tasks with minimal intervention from school.

We also run school based sessions for our ‘Explore’ group pupils. This year, the pupils worked on a Easter confectionary project which culminated in the production of some fantastic cakes, which were sold to staff and parents. In preparation for this, the pupils visited local supermarkets and received expert tuition from Slattery Patissier and Chocolatier. The group learned to work as a team, produce food to a high standard and meet deadlines. They also managed to make a profit through the sales of their produce and were able to reward themselves with a trip to a local café.

Our Specialist Provision and Complex Needs group undertook a number of school based sessions and external visits. These were led by key staff and included a bread-making session from Warburtons and visits to Stockley Farm, Manchester Museum of Science and Industry and Morrisons supermarket. Pupils also undertook ‘work placements’ around school which, involved taking responsibility for the class registers and assisting in the dinner hall.

A massive thank you to all the local businesses and organisations that supported our pupils in their World of Work day!
